After days of torrential rain and an ominous weather forecast, the clouds parted to make way for a different kind of storm at The Electric Factory in Philadelphia. Thousands of fans would converge to witness Eagles of Death Metal, Opeth, Gojia, and Mastodon bring the kind of thunder that would outdo mother nature on her most devastating day. On this day, The Electric Factory hosted it’s first of a series of outdoor concerts in it’s own parking lot!

Eagles of Death Metal got the adrenaline rushing, and could have easily been the headliner of the evening! Fans packed the lot to see the high energy front man, Jesse Hughes, jump, prance and dance through each blazing song. EODM is a band that loves their fans and interacting with them. The audience ate it up and the concert was off to a raucous start!

After an intense set by EODM, French metal band Gojira roared onto the stage. Singer and guitarist Joe Duplantier is not the most intimidating figure on stage, but his guttural vocals are enough to intimidate even the most imposing thug! The band played one thrashing song after another, creating a whirling mosh pit just off stage. Crowd surfers were tossed like rag dolls across the sea of people, anxiously trying to make it to the stage. So just how did Gojira get their name? Once you see and hear them, the answer is perfectly evident. Gojira is the romanji spelling of the mighty “Godzilla”!!! Like the massive monster they are, Gojira will be hitting the road with some of the biggest beasts of all this summer, Avenged Sevenfold and Metallica!!!

Haling from Stockholm, Opeth would be next up on this most devastating night of metal mayhem!!! Mikael Akerfeldt has a vocal technique that goes from hauntingly melodic to a death growl, easily separating Opeth’s sound from that of their peers. Though there have been many personnel changes through the years, Opeth has successfully endured and carried a huge fan base world wide.

Finally the time has come. Mastodon now gives their own Saturday night mass, and it is everything anticipated! Singer and bassist, Troy Sanders led off the set. Guitarist Brent Hinds, who earlier in the day joined EODM on stage, rips off blistering riffs from all the fan favorite songs. Rising decibels throughout the area, windows and and signs rattle on nearby buildings!!! Mastodon’s set was slightly marred by technical difficulties with their monitors. Brent Hinds was none too pleased as his frustration was visible on stage. Kicking the monitors, while yelling and flipping off the sound engineer, you knew there were issues. Despite all that, the crowd enjoyed the extra show! The band grinded it out and left nobody in this Sold Out crowd disappointed.

If you missed this great outdoor show at Philly’s famed Electric Factory, don’t worry! It gets even better on July 23rd as the outdoor series explodes with SLAYER, Lamb of God and Behemoth!!! Get your tickets now!!!
