Usually, paybacks are a bitch! Not this time. Avenged Sevenfold lit up Philly in a blazing fury. Let’s take a small step back in time. It was just earlier last month, May 12th, that virtually every Metal head in the tri-state area and beyond had been waiting for. It was Metallica – WorldWired Tour 2017 at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia. As if Metallica wasn’t enough on it’s own, they were bringing their heavy hitting friends, Avenged Sevenfold and Volbeat. The beginning of the day was full of excitement and high voltage electricity in anticipation of what was only hours away. But, as people were already starting to lineup outside of the stadium, rumor had it that Avenged Sevenfold had suddenly dropped off of the bill? It turned out the rumor was true, but the reason was justified. It was learned that Synyster Gates wife had gone into early labor with their first child. He immediately caught a plane back home to be with his bride. The news was surprising and very disappointing to the fans, as well as Avenged. Excited about the newest “member” of A7X’s imminent arrival, the guys vowed to make it up to Philadelphia in a big way. Within a week it was revealed that Avenged would return to Philly for a “Free” concert, at the BB&T Pavilion in Camden, NJ, to make up their show. Anyone who had a ticket for the Metallica show received an e-mail with a redemption code for as many as 4 GA tickets. Needless to say, everyone and more took advantage of this offer.
Let’s flash forward to Wednesday night, June 21st. Avenged is back for a Full set of their music! The fans were liked wild caged dogs just waiting to be let loose. The stage was notably bare bones with none of the usual props and staging that A7X is known for. They were simply here to Rock and melt faces with a endless barrage of fire and pyrotechnics. Behind them was a large video screen that served as their main back drop, often with their winged skull menacing over them. They ripped into a blistering 14 song set that opened with “The Stage” and included huge A7X hits, “Hail to The King”, “Nightmare”, “Almost Easy”, “Planets” and “Acid Rain”. Things turned to Halloween mode with an epic encore of “Bat Country”, “A Little Piece of Heaven” and “Unholy Confession”. The video screen played their ghoulish animated video behind them as the songs whipped the audience into a frenzy!
As the lights went up to end the show, they announced that they will indeed be back to rock Philadelphia early next year in January or February. I mentioned earlier, that for A7X, it’s family first. It was a special moment at the end of the show when A7X members young children came out on stage to help toss fists full of their Daddy’s guitar picks and drum sticks out into the crowd. The crowd was clearly more than satisfied with this makeup performance by Avenged Sevenfold. The loyalty of A7X to their fans was evident. It was also clear the loyalty the fans had to A7X, by showing up in droves with many of them covered with A7X bat skull tattoos!!! We’ll look forward to seeing them back in the Philadelphia area in 2018 with a Full stage production!
