Story and Photos by Tom Collins
Legendary guitarist of the classic Genesis lineup, Steve Hackett, is widely known for his innovative style of guitar tapping and sweep picking serving as an inspiration for many future guitar virtuosos. His style and tone is ethereal, often sending your sense of hearing to a far off astral plane. Steve Hackett, being part of Genesis in their early years, earned him a spot in The Rock&Roll Hall of Fame with band mates Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins, Mike Rutherford and Tony Banks.
I had the great pleasure to see Steve Hackett perform his Genesis Revisited Tour, while at The Scottish Rite Auditorium in Collingswood, NJ. It’s a beautiful, intimate room with fantastic sound and not a bad seat in the house! What would his show be like? Would it just be all of Hackett’s solo work? Will he play Genesis music? How could he ever find a band to do that uniquely progressive sound, justice? I am pleased to say that all of those questions were answered and more!
Steve Hackett took to the stage looking like he had hardly aged from the early 70’s. All he needed was the big mustache, white bell bottom suit, sitting on a chair. The show consisted of 2 Sets. The first set opened with “Please Don’t Touch”. He then played songs from GTR such as “When The Heart Rules.” Steve’s band was nothing short of magnificent!
The second set of the show was dedicated solely to Hackett’s work in Genesis. Joining the band on stage is vocalist, Nad Sylvan. I could not have been more impressed with how amazingly he handled the unique vocals of Peter Gabriel. He was simply brilliant! Steve played his favorite Fernandes gold top guitar, sending everyone in the audience back in time to his era with Genesis!
Rock Titan had the honor and pleasure of interviewing Steve Hackett the following day. Both he and his wife were the loveliest couple you could ever hope to meet. It was quite surreal to listen to the wealth of music history coming from a person who helped make that history! Watch our Full interview between Steve Hackett and Scotty J and I guarantee you will be as fascinated and intrigued.
