May 24, 2023 – It is a somber day indeed. We’ve lost yet another icon and trail blazer in the music world. She was born Anna Mae Bullock (November 26, 1939 – May 24, 2023). We all lovingly and adoringly knew her as Tina Turner. Tina was indeed a legend whose heels will never be adequately filled.
Now I’m not going to sit here writing professing that I’m the biggest Tina Turner fan who ever lived. I never saw a concert or even bought an album. What I will say, is that I’m a child of the 80’s, and Tina Turner burned her legacy into my memories for the rest of my life.
I never had cable tv as a kid growing up. So, I only saw Tina on MTV when I went to a friends house. I vividly remember “What’s Love Got To Do With It”. It was the visual and audible of her unique presence that immediately allowed me to identify her in ‘Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome’. She captivated me from a young age. There was a presence I couldn’t fully appreciate until I was much older. That said, I knew I had seen and heard someone who had a special place in our culture.
Tina Turner meant many different things to an immense variety of people. She had an incredibly successful career before I came into being. Because of the works and influence Tina made on this world, she’ll continue to have an affect long after I’m gone. That in of itself defines greatness. Tina Turner, as a result of her works and life, are immortalized.
So Tina, as you embark on your journey to the next great experience of your existence, thank you for leaving us with your amazing artistic gifts. The examples left will inspire generations to come. Whatever any musician may accomplish in the years ahead, there was already and will only ever be one Queen of Rock N Roll. God speed Tina Turner.
