Interview with Seven Spires and other errant thoughts by Scotty J
Rarely to I heap praise on a musician as I’m speaking to them. However, after listening to the vocals of Adrienne Cowan of Seven Spires, I was unable to hold back! On February 14, Emerald Seas becomes available to the publics as Seven Spires second full length album release. For everyone that enjoyed “Solveig“, get prepared to be blown away by “Emerald Seas”.
Igne defendit – Starts out as dreamlike in a foreign language. Sounds like backing of epic fantasy video game or movie. Heavy Arabian theme. Total instrumental intro.
Ghost of a Dream – Adrienne shows off her beautiful vocals omitting her equally powerful growling until the very end. The combination of classic acoustic guitar and keyboards with heavy metal riffs kick this sophomore release into high gear.
No Words Exchanged – Love the guitar intro! Then Adrienne once again showcases her more melodic and angelic vocals. Seven Spires supports their strong abilities in the prog metal genre. But as we’ve heard before that’s not the extent of their sound.
Every Crest – Is it too soon to pronounce Adrienne as one of the more prolific female voices in metal? This song proves she could be the lead in any musical imaginable. For the first time on “Emerald Seas” we get a teaser of her growling. She’s got as awesome a range as anyone in the business.
Unmapped Darkness – I’m waiting for Adrienne to be the featured as the voice of the next Disney Princess! Should Disney go a little darker, her harder vocal side could even make it. How awesome would that be? That said Unmapped Darkness also features an awesome guitar solo and great licks throughout. This is as complete a metal band as there is.
Succumb – They recently launched a music video for this gem. Drums and Keyboard, and bass work set this song apart from any other track on the album so far. This quartet as a whole proves there’s no one with whom they couldn’t share a stage. With succumb you get a taste of every bandmates individual excellence.
Drowner of Worlds – Another music video launched in support of what is likely the darkest song on Emerald Seas. You’ll get no clean vocals out of Adrienne on this one. Her deep growling and guttural vocals will have you in awe of her diverse range and flexibility.
Silvery Moon – Whisked away to a classical era from the onset of the song, you get a taste of something almost Celtic. Powerful and beautiful on all fronts. The song writing is just awesome. Very poetic.
Bury You – It’s impossible to deny Adrienne flat out has one of the most incredible voices whether it’s rock, metal, or otherwise. Hearing her in this song I’d love to see her do a collaboration with Amy Lee of Evanescence.
Fearless – There is absolutely nothing fearless about this song. I’d be afraid to mess with the person making such and evil and diabolical growl. It’s hard to imagine a vocalist can perform two totally distinctive sounds.
With Love From The Other Side – An interestingly timed interlude of sorts. But again the voice he is incredible. Almost hypnotic.
The Trouble With Eternal Life – The intro with is selective use of horns before breaking into a furiously paced guitar riff is pretty cool. Here we are toward the end of the album and Seven Spires is still showcasing tremendous variety in their style. Straight up Jack Kosto can just shred.
Emerald Seas – To close out the album they go with their title track. A symphonic orchestra kicks things off as if it were signaling the apex of a defining moment. Predominantly an instrumental piece, it is a fitting end to a fine sophomore creation from the minds of Seven Spires.
